Zcash developers released the Udon Rust crate on September 28, 2026, to integrate Project Tachyon’s recursive proof code into the Zakura Common cryptographic stack. This initiative aims to enable the Zcash network to process over 50,000 shielded transactions per second.
Project Tachyon, led by Sean Bowe, focuses on proof-carrying data architecture. This method allows validators to verify data incrementally by attaching validity proofs to each piece of information. The Udon crate optimizes existing Pasta curve and Halo 2 implementations for these requirements.
The Valar Group is collaborating on a transaction aggregation strategy to decouple the shielded protocol from the wallet layer. This separation is intended to simplify future upgrades, including the eventual transition to post-quantum cryptography standards.
The integration builds on the Zakura 1.0 release from July 15, 2026. That update reduced transaction construction times from over three seconds to under 200 milliseconds, improved mobile proof generation by over 14 times, and boosted desktop performance by more than five times.
