The developers created the YOLO Annotator tool to address the need for an offline labeling solution that supports both bounding boxes and polygon annotations. The software runs locally on a laptop, eliminating the need for server-side deployment or maintenance required by platforms like CVAT or Label Studio.

The tool has evolved from a basic utility into a comprehensive solution supporting oriented bounding boxes (OBB), masks, and multi-user modes. It now includes features for semantic and panoptic segmentation, catering to more complex computer vision tasks.

The software supports direct data export into formats compatible with YOLO, Detectron2, and Mask2Former. The project code is publicly available under the GPL-3.0 license for community use and further development.
