Microsoft has introduced a new Cloud Rebuild feature for Windows 11, designed to restore PCs to a clean state by downloading a fresh OS image and drivers directly via Windows Update. This tool functions independently of the existing Windows installation, eliminating the need for external boot media like USB drives.

The feature is accessible through the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) under the Troubleshoot menu. Microsoft has updated WinRE to support existing Wi-Fi profiles, allowing the system to connect to networks automatically during the recovery process without requiring manual credential entry.

Users should be aware that Cloud Rebuild performs a complete wipe of the system drive, removing all local files, applications, and settings. Microsoft advises backing up data before initiation. For managed devices, the system can automatically reconnect to Windows Autopilot and Intune to restore policies.

Currently in preview, the tool is intended to assist users when the OS is too corrupted to boot normally. A wider release of the Cloud Rebuild functionality is expected to take place later this year.
