Kevin Hassett, head of the White House National Economic Council, stated that AI safety should be managed by private companies rather than federal regulators. During interviews held from September 13 to 15, he supported a self-governance proposal from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
The proposal involves creating independent oversight boards within AI firms to coordinate safety measures. Hassett argued that the private sector is already making progress in this area and noted that he does not expect safety warnings to cause market instability.
The administration is currently exploring testing procedures for AI models. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is reportedly involved in coordinating efforts to evaluate Anthropic’s Mythos model, signaling high-level interest in the safety of these technologies.
President Trump has previously emphasized the geopolitical importance of AI dominance, framing it as a national security priority. While the administration considers safety, it avoids establishing a formal regulatory body with enforcement powers to maintain competitive speed.
