Jay Clayton, the newly appointed head of the White House AI task force, has embarked on his first official trip to Silicon Valley. The visit marks his initial engagement with major technology industry executives since taking on the role of overseeing federal AI initiatives.

During his visit, Clayton is scheduled to meet with several prominent CEOs, including Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic, and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta. He also held discussions with Nikesh Arora, the CEO of Palo Alto Networks, regarding AI safety protocols.

The task force, which Trump refers to as the 'Super Intelligence Task Force,' was established following public concerns over AI safety risks. Clayton reports directly to Donald Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. The administration recently secured a voluntary safety agreement with several AI companies.

Clayton emphasized that AI development must be balanced with public safety, requiring robust control and monitoring mechanisms. He advocates for utilizing existing legal frameworks to hold companies accountable, stating that firms must adhere to regulations to continue their operations.

Prior to this appointment, Clayton served as the Director of National Intelligence and as a federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York. His background also includes roles as Chairman of the SEC and Chairman of Apollo Global Management.
