Bitcoin price fluctuated around $77,000 this week, marking a 3.4% decline. Market capitalization of digital assets fell to $2.63 trillion. Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw outflows of nearly $463 million, while Ethereum-based funds recorded inflows exceeding $197 million for the fourth consecutive week.
Liquid Network suffered a major security breach on September 6, resulting in the theft of approximately 4,000 BTC valued at $320 million. Attackers exploited a software vulnerability to mint unauthorized L-BTC tokens. By September 8, the hackers returned 3,400 BTC, but Blockstream has refused to pay for the recovery of the remaining 598 BTC.
Security researchers at Hacken identified potential risks in the USDT management contract on the TRON network, noting that control over half of the stablecoin's supply could be compromised if two administrative keys are breached. Tether currently uses a shared set of six keys across Ethereum, Avalanche, and Celo.
IonQ researchers estimated that a quantum computer with 20,000 physical qubits could break the secp256k1 elliptic curve cryptography used by Bitcoin in approximately 26 days. The calculation accounts for the Shor algorithm, hardware architecture, and error correction systems required for such an operation.
The Ethereum Foundation has prioritized two EIPs for the upcoming Pectra upgrade: FOCIL (EIP-7805) to improve censorship resistance and Frame Transactions (EIP-8141) to enhance account abstraction. Developers aim to make the Ethereum base layer quantum-resistant by December 2029.
