German chemical manufacturer WACKER has introduced ELASTOSIL LR 3822, a liquid silicone rubber designed for connector seals and cooling circuit elements in EV traction batteries. The material features a self-lubricating property, continuously releasing silicone oil to create a film on the molded part. This mechanism simplifies automated assembly processes by reducing the high friction typically associated with silicone rubber.

The elastomer demonstrates resistance to coolant fluids, maintaining mechanical properties after 1,000 hours of exposure to a glycol-water mixture at 125 degrees Celsius. Tests showed a compression set of 44 percent under these conditions, ensuring consistent sealing performance. The material remains elastic at temperatures as low as -45 degrees Celsius and can stretch by 270 percent without sustaining damage.

The product is a two-component compound with a 1:1 mixing ratio and a minimum pot life of three days at room temperature. It features a Shore A 60 hardness rating, short curing times, and reduced volatile content. WACKER supplies the rubber in 20 kg pails and 200 kg drum kits, targeting applications such as battery coolant connectors, radiator gaskets, and automotive seals.
