Volkswagen has officially confirmed the discontinuation of the ID.5 electric SUV-coupe. The model, which debuted in 2021 as the brand's first electric SUV-coupe, will not receive a direct successor. The company is consolidating its lineup by replacing both the ID.4 and ID.5 with a single new model, the ID. Tiguan.
The ID. Tiguan is scheduled for a world premiere in early October, with sales expected to begin in early 2027. Unlike the ID.5, the new vehicle will feature a more traditional, upright design intended to maximize interior space and align with the branding of the combustion-powered Tiguan.
This decision reflects a broader shift in Volkswagen's strategy toward utilizing familiar nameplates for its electric vehicles. The company aims to simplify its offerings and improve clarity for customers. The ID.5 was never sold in the United States and faced weaker demand compared to the more conventional ID.4.
The move is part of a larger effort within the Volkswagen Group to streamline its product portfolio, with plans to reduce its total lineup by as much as 50 percent. By merging the two electric SUVs, the manufacturer intends to optimize resource allocation and focus on more practical vehicle configurations.
