Vitalik Buterin stated at the Network State Conference 2026 that artificial intelligence is significantly accelerating the development of the Ethereum protocol. He noted that without AI, certain goals within the Lean Roadmap might not have been achieved until 2040 or 2050.
The integration of AI focuses on research and coding, specifically formal verification using the Lean 4 language. This approach reduces the need for manual code auditing, which is essential as Ethereum transitions toward an architecture featuring recursive STARKs and quantum resistance.
In early 2026, experiments successfully produced a prototype Ethereum client that covered approximately 65 roadmap items and synchronized with the mainnet. The next major milestone, the Hegota upgrade, is scheduled for 2027 and is considered the final standard fork for the network.
Buterin highlighted the dual nature of AI in development, noting its ability to speed up technical tasks while simultaneously introducing new security risks. He emphasized that formal verification serves as a necessary safeguard to ensure the correctness of machine-generated code.
