Vanderbilt University is adapting its identity governance framework to manage the integration of AI agents into institutional workflows. The university currently utilizes the OneVU platform, which is powered by Okta, to manage single sign-on processes across its diverse environment.
CIO Shane Callahan noted that the university's complex structure, which spans athletics, residential life, and a police department, creates significant security challenges. The institution manages over $1 billion in research, requiring precise control over multiple user profiles and access rights.
The introduction of AI agents complicates accountability, as it remains unclear who bears responsibility when an agent operates outside established guardrails. Callahan emphasized that organizations should leverage existing governance and technology-intake processes rather than creating entirely new systems for AI.
The discussion took place at the Oktane event, where Callahan addressed the need for cross-functional governance to handle identity data within new technological tools. The university continues to evaluate how cyber insurance and liability frameworks will apply to autonomous agent actions.
