Valve has officially ended production of its Index VR headset. The company is currently clearing out remaining inventory of headsets, controllers, and accessories through the Steam store until supplies are exhausted.
The price for the Index headset on the US store has been reduced by 20 percent to $399.20, down from the standard price of $499. Discounts of 20 percent also apply to the replacement left controller and tether.
Valve confirmed that existing Index owners will continue to receive support via Steam and SteamVR. The device originally launched in June 2019 with a full kit price of $999.
The company has introduced the Steam Frame as its successor, with preorders opening on September 14. The 256 GB model is priced at $1059, while the 1 TB version costs $1299.
The Steam Frame utilizes camera-based inside-out tracking and is incompatible with the Lighthouse base stations required by the Index. Currently, the new headset is available only through a reservation lottery system.
