Valve is reportedly developing an OLED iteration of its Steam Frame VR headset, currently identified by the internal codename Plano. Evidence of this project emerged from the company's Linux kernel source code, where a branch labeled deckard-plano was discovered. Development activities on this specific branch were recorded between March and early October 2026.
The technical specifications suggest a significant display upgrade, with driver code indicating a native resolution of 3552x3840 pixels per eye. This represents nearly triple the pixel density compared to the 2160x2160 LCD panels found in the existing model. The device is expected to retain the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, utilizing a default rendering resolution of 1776x1920 per eye.
Engineers are testing refresh rates of 90 Hz and 120 Hz, alongside a foveated scaling feature designed to adjust pixel density based on the user's gaze. While the current Steam Frame model recently launched with a price tag of $1,059, analysts suggest an OLED version would likely command a higher cost. Valve has not officially confirmed the project, and a potential release is not expected before late 2027.
