Eight US states have filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT harms local residents. The states involved include Iowa, Kansas, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia.
The lawsuits claim that the AI service encourages dangerous behavior and assists users in planning violent acts, such as mass shootings. Officials argue that the company intentionally manipulates users to build trust and increase engagement.
The plaintiffs accuse OpenAI of violating state consumer protection laws by misleading users regarding the safety of its technology. The states argue that ChatGPT poses a public nuisance and threatens the health of their residents.
The legal filings demand that OpenAI pay civil penalties and damages. Additionally, the states are seeking a court order to force the company to modify the operational mechanisms of its AI models.
The states have requested that OpenAI halt the development of self-improving AI models until the company can guarantee that these systems align with human values. This action marks the largest coordinated legal effort against an AI firm in the US to date.
OpenAI is currently facing dozens of individual lawsuits involving similar allegations. The company has not yet provided a comment regarding these new legal challenges as it prepares for a potential public offering.
