The US government is expected to announce a donation of AI compute credits on October 8, 2026. This initiative is part of the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, which aims to integrate national laboratory supercomputers with private cloud infrastructure.
The Genesis Mission was established by executive order in November 2025 to support research in energy, biology, materials science, and national security. By December 2025, 24 organizations had joined the program.
As of July 2026, private partnerships for the mission exceeded $800 million. Microsoft contributed $60 million, including $40 million in Azure credits over three years, while Google committed $40 million in cloud credits and AI tokens.
Separately, a new coalition launched the National Compute Grid to pool unused AI hardware capacity. The project targets an initial capacity of 760 MW, with plans to scale to 2 GW by 2030.
