The US Department of Justice has issued an internal directive instructing staff to replace the term artificial intelligence with superintelligence. This change applies to official communications, policy documents, and court filings to the maximum extent permitted by law.

The memorandum was signed by Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter. This instruction follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, which mandates that federal agencies adopt the new terminology to better reflect the potential of the technology.

The directive also introduces the abbreviation SI to be used in place of AI. While Trump has generally opposed new regulations for the technology, he has previously stated that the Department of Justice could impose restrictions if deemed necessary.

The shift in terminology comes amid growing public concern regarding the safety of intelligent technologies following a series of hacking incidents. The administration intends for this linguistic update to be implemented across all official records and legal documentation.
