David Sack, co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, stated that leading AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic should prioritize developing safe products independently. He emphasized that these companies should manage their own development pace without relying on government intervention.

Sack expressed support for former FTC chair Lina Khan's position regarding product liability. He noted that AI companies could face civil or criminal litigation if their models are deemed unsafe or cause destructive cyberattacks. According to Sack, the market is already penalizing models that exhibit unpredictable or unauthorized behavior.

The official also criticized Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for his recent proposal. Amodei had suggested that the US government grant antitrust exemptions to AI companies, allowing them to coordinate and slow down development through safety-focused dialogues. Sack rejected the notion that these companies are motivated solely by altruism.
