The author upgraded a Lily58 Pro split keyboard to wireless using nRF52840-based controllers. Initial attempts with black-colored clones led to connectivity issues, input lag, and battery instability, forcing a temporary return to wired mode.
A replacement with red-colored Chinese clones resolved the hardware stability issues. To fix remaining input lag caused by OLED displays, the author modified the ZMK firmware configuration by enabling dedicated work queues and adjusting thread priority.
The author replaced 80 mAh batteries with 3 000 mAh Li-ion cells, increasing capacity by 37 times. This upgrade required modifying the 3D-printed case to accommodate larger batteries, which involved removing internal mounts and rerouting the RGB LED strip.
The final build utilizes a translucent PLA case to diffuse the RGB lighting. The author estimates that the new battery configuration allows for one to two weeks of operation with moderate RGB usage, or up to two months with the lighting disabled.
