The open-source npu-driver project demonstrates the ability to render the Windows 11 desktop, including applications like Edge and Notepad, using a system NPU instead of the GPU. The driver is designed to switch back to GPU rendering automatically when necessary.
Currently, the driver functions as a research prototype rather than a finished product. Performance remains a primary challenge, with the software achieving refresh rates of 2 to 3 Hz, while the development team aims for 30 Hz.
Development is taking place on a laptop equipped with an Intel Panther Lake processor, which features NPU 5 architecture and delivers 45 to 50 TOPS. According to the project team, utilizing the NPU for desktop composition can reduce 3D GPU usage from 3.4% to 0.6%.
This shift allows the GPU to allocate more resources to other tasks, such as local model inference. The project highlights the potential for utilizing NPUs, which often remain idle in modern laptops, for system-level operations.
