Major US university endowments are poised to match or surpass S&P 500 returns for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026. This performance shift follows a period where large funds with over $5 billion in assets saw annualized returns of 7.8%, while the S&P 500 reached 19.7%.

The University of North Carolina system anticipates returns exceeding 30%, while the University of Colorado Foundation projects 20.3%. These results are largely attributed to early venture capital investments in companies such as SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

Harvard Management Company reported a $2.2 billion stake in SpaceX as of June 30, 2026. This investment now represents the largest single public equity holding within the university's portfolio.

The University of Colorado invested approximately $4.2 million in SpaceX in 2009, with the position growing to roughly $289 million. Meanwhile, the University of Michigan's initial $20 million investment in OpenAI now carries a target redemption value of $2 billion.
