Universal Quantum has raised €89 million in a Series A funding round, marking the largest such investment for a quantum computing company in the UK. The round was co-led by DCVC and Firgun Ventures, with participation from EDBI, Artal, Integral GlobalTech, Main Sequence, Hostplus, NGS Super, IAG Capital, EdenBase, Eigenstate.holdings, and Roblox founder Dave Baszucki.

The company, founded in 2018 by professors Sebastian Weidt and Winfried Hensinger, plans to use the capital to scale its modular trapped-ion quantum computing technology. The funds will support global expansion, including a new R&D center in Singapore and operations in the United States and Japan, alongside the existing hub in Hamburg.

Universal Quantum currently employs over 100 technical staff across three continents. The firm is working on a €68 million contract with the German Aerospace Center. Its technology utilizes patented interconnects and integrated chips to build fault-tolerant systems capable of performing complex tasks in fields like drug discovery and climate modeling.

The European quantum hardware sector has seen significant activity in 2026, with total investments exceeding €803 million across eight companies, including Universal Quantum. Other notable deals this year include Oxford Quantum Circuits with €301 million, QuantWare with €152 million, Quobly with €115 million, eleQtron with €57 million, and ZuriQ with €22.4 million.
