The UN Security Council is holding a session to discuss artificial intelligence risks with industry leaders. The meeting, chaired by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, will feature briefings from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue, and researcher Yoshua Bengio. Representatives from Chinese firms DeepSeek and Moonshot are also invited to provide statements.

The discussion focuses on the potential for AI systems to operate beyond human control, including risks related to cyberattacks, election interference, and autonomous weapon design. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who will participate remotely, recently advocated for slowing the development of frontier models and providing external evaluators with staff-level access to safety protocols.

The session precedes a scheduled meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 24, where AI safety is expected to be a topic of discussion. Previously, King Charles hosted executives from Anthropic, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Google DeepMind at a summit in Scotland, which concluded without formal agreements.

Tensions regarding AI development remain high, as evidenced by the reaction to Amodei's recent essay on frontier models. While Amodei argued for continued export restrictions on advanced chips to China, the Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the stance. President Trump has publicly dismissed concerns regarding AI-takeover risks as a hoax.
