Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, plans to manufacture lithium manganese rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells at its facility in Spring Hill, Tennessee. This initiative aims to make the company the first global manufacturer to produce this technology commercially for future electric vehicles.

The LMR prismatic cells are designed to provide an energy density 33% higher than lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries while maintaining a comparable cost. This addition to the product portfolio is intended to support General Motors' strategy of matching specific battery technologies to vehicle requirements and customer needs.

Facility upgrades and construction at the Spring Hill plant are scheduled to commence later this year, with completion expected in 2028. The expansion project is set to generate 500 new jobs, increasing the site's total workforce beyond the current 1,200 employees.
