A recent survey by Deloitte reveals that 52% of UK chief financial officers anticipate workforce reductions due to artificial intelligence within the next year. The study, which polled 66 finance chiefs between September 17 and October 1, 2026, highlights a shift in corporate priorities toward cost-cutting measures.
While over half of the respondents expect staff cuts, only one-third believe that AI will significantly increase profit margins in the coming year. Furthermore, 67% of the executives noted that they have implemented only about one-quarter of the long-term AI-driven changes they anticipate for their organizations.
The survey indicates a defensive corporate sentiment, with 68% of CFOs identifying cost reduction as a top priority, compared to 53% in previous reports. Finance leaders also expressed concerns regarding macroeconomic factors, projecting inflation to reach 3.4% and citing geopolitical risks as a primary external threat.
The findings suggest a trend of jobless growth, where companies focus on efficiency through automation. With 67% of the expected AI impact yet to materialize, analysts suggest that current headcount discussions may be only the beginning of a broader shift in employment strategies across the UK.
