The UK Ministry of Defence officially formed the No. III Space Effects Squadron on September 23. This new unit, integrated into the Royal Air Force, is tasked with countering hostile threats to national satellite infrastructure. The squadron will focus on both offensive and defensive operations, including electronic warfare and countermeasures against anti-satellite weaponry.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth stated that the unit supports the broader development of orbital warfare capabilities. While the specific systems used by the squadron remain classified, the move marks a significant expansion of the RAF's military space organization. The service currently operates the No. I Space Operations Squadron and the No. II Space Warning Squadron.

The military plans to establish additional units, including Space Squadrons 4, 5, and 6. These future groups will handle space tactics, training, and deep space advanced radar capabilities. They will also function within the newly created Integrated Air, Space and Missile Defence Operations Centre to enhance national security.

To support these initiatives, the UK government has allocated £880 million for the period between 2026/27 and 2029/30. This funding is dedicated to space-based intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and space control activities. Officials emphasize that these developments are primarily intended as a deterrent against potential conflicts in orbit.
