According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, small-scale solar generation in the United States rose from 18,812 GWh to 92,979 GWh over the last decade. These systems are defined as having a capacity of less than 1 megawatt.

California remains the leader in small-scale solar, producing 34,411 GWh in 2025, which represents 37% of the national total. The state's capacity grew from 18 gigawatts in 2024 to 20 gigawatts in 2025.

Arizona, Texas, and Florida also rank among the top states for solar generation. Texas saw growth from 391 GWh in 2016 to 5,408 GWh in 2025, while Florida increased from 205 GWh to 5,198 GWh in the same period.

Growth in generation peaked in 2022 with a 25% year-over-year increase, partly driven by policy changes like California's NEM 2.0 program. While generation continues to rise, the overall rate of growth has slowed since 2022.
