President Trump proposed renaming artificial intelligence to super intelligence during his address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2026. All US government documents will now adopt this new terminology, and the president encouraged other nations to follow this example.
The decision to rebrand the technology followed a public poll on Truth Social, where users selected super intelligence over alternatives like Superior Intelligence and Extreme Intelligence. The term artificial intelligence has been in official use since 1956, when it was coined by John McCarthy.
During the assembly, the US rejected international AI regulatory frameworks, labeling them as a globalist scheme. This stance placed the US in opposition to at least 22 nations that support human oversight of AI systems. The speech occurred one day before a scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The new terminology creates potential confusion, as superintelligence is already a technical term for a hypothetical future AI system that exceeds human cognitive abilities. Neither the UN nor major international standards bodies have indicated plans to adopt the new name.
