President Donald Trump issued an executive order in late September requiring federal agencies to replace the term 'Artificial Intelligence' (AI) with 'Super Intelligence' (SI) in all official communications. Trump stated on Truth Social that those who refuse to adopt the new terminology will be considered enemies of the White House.
While the mandate does not apply to private companies, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on X that the company plans to rename its 'SpaceXAI' division to 'SpaceXSI'. This would mark the second name change for the division this year, following the acquisition of the Grok developer xAI in February and a rebranding to SpaceXAI in July.
The policy has met with mixed reactions from industry leaders. During a recent White House meeting, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang corrected himself after accidentally using the term 'AI', while OpenAI President Greg Brockman referred to 'Artificial Intelligence' during his remarks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated there are no plans to rename the company.
Critics have noted that potential enforcement of such linguistic standards against private entities could raise concerns regarding the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. As of Thursday afternoon, the official X account for the SpaceX division remained under the name 'SpaceXAI'.
