President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet in Washington on September 23 for a two-day summit focused on artificial intelligence. The agenda includes discussions on AI safety, trade tariffs, technology export controls, and the supply of rare earth minerals.

A state dinner scheduled for September 24 will host prominent technology executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. Preparatory negotiations for the summit were conducted by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

The summit follows a previous meeting between the two leaders in Beijing on May 14–15, 2026, which concluded without formal agreements. Current US officials have stated they will not exchange relaxed AI export controls for guarantees regarding rare earth mineral supplies.

The discussions are expected to address shared risks, such as cyber threats and the potential bifurcation of global tech ecosystems. Regulatory outcomes from the summit may impact compliance requirements and operational costs for companies navigating both the US and Chinese markets.
