The Trump administration has officially finalized a new rule that reverses federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. This decision effectively lowers the fuel efficiency requirements for vehicles operating in the United States.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, previous, more stringent fuel economy standards were projected to save Americans billions of dollars in fuel costs and reduce national gasoline consumption by tens of billions of gallons.
Transportation currently represents the second-largest household expense in the country, accounting for approximately 17 percent of average family spending. The rollback is expected to increase the financial burden on households already facing high gasoline prices.
The Sierra Club has publicly opposed the decision, stating that the move provides automakers with fewer restrictions on pollution while increasing fuel costs for consumers. The organization has pledged to challenge the rollback through advocacy and legal action.
