Toyota has confirmed the upcoming production of the hydrogen-powered Hilux FCEV, scheduled for release in the European market in 2028. The model will be sold alongside diesel and battery-electric versions of the pickup.

The vehicle features a fuel cell powertrain with a range exceeding 400 km under the WLTP cycle. It is capable of towing up to 2,500 kg. In comparison, the electric Hilux BEV offers a range of approximately 257 km and a towing capacity between 1,600 kg and 2,000 kg.

Refueling the three hydrogen tanks takes about five minutes. However, the current infrastructure remains limited, with approximately 179 hydrogen stations operating across Europe and the UK. Consequently, the initial rollout will target corporate fleets and regions with established networks.

Development of the hydrogen Hilux began several years ago, utilizing technology from the Toyota Mirai sedan. A prototype was first unveiled in 2022, followed by the production of ten experimental units in the UK in 2024. These prototypes featured a rear-axle electric motor producing 182 hp and 300 Nm of torque.
