Toyota has filed a patent for a system that simulates a sequential manual transmission in electric vehicles. The technology uses software to manipulate electric motor torque, creating the sensation of gear shifts without a physical clutch pedal. By briefly cutting and then restoring torque, the system mimics the mechanical jolt of a racing gearbox.
The patent describes selectable profiles, such as sport or race modes, which adjust the intensity of the simulated shifts. This approach aims to provide a familiar experience for drivers while potentially improving performance through faster shift times. The system could be integrated with steering wheel paddles, similar to those featured on the Lexus LFA Concept.
The development aligns with the expected 2027 launch of the all-electric Lexus LFA. While Lexus has not confirmed the technology for production, the LFA Concept, first shown in 2025, already includes steering wheel paddles. Similar technology is currently available in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, and Porsche has also filed related patents.
