Toyota Gazoo Racing has unveiled the DKR GR FC Hilux, an experimental prototype designed for the Dakar 2027 rally in Saudi Arabia. Unlike the standard racing models, this vehicle features a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain instead of a traditional gasoline engine.
The prototype is based on the GR DKR Hilux EVO T1+ chassis, retaining its specialized body, short wheelbase, and long-travel suspension. While the company has not disclosed specific power output or range figures, it confirmed the vehicle will compete in the Dakar Future Mission 1000 category.
The project aims to test fuel cell durability, cooling systems, and component miniaturization under extreme conditions. Toyota plans to leverage these findings for the development of a production hydrogen-powered pickup truck, which is scheduled for release in 2028.
Toyota will continue to field the gasoline-powered GR DKR Hilux EVO T1+, which has secured four Dakar victories in 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2025. The hydrogen prototype will cover over 1,000 km across 13 stages to gather performance data.
