TotalEnergies has entered into a three-year partnership with the French AI startup Mistral AI. The deal, announced on September 15, involves an investment exceeding €100 million to develop custom artificial intelligence models for the energy sector.

The companies plan to launch a joint scientific laboratory. TotalEnergies will provide its proprietary dataset, which contains nearly 10 petaflops of subsurface geological information collected over several decades, while Mistral AI will supply the necessary AI architecture.

The primary goal of the collaboration is to create tools for generating exploration scenarios. These models are intended to help engineers analyze development plans for oil and gas fields more efficiently than manual methods, potentially extending the lifespan of existing assets.

This agreement follows an initial collaboration between the two firms that began in June 2025. While the previous project covered a broad range of energy initiatives, the new deal focuses specifically on upstream geoscience operations.

The partnership emphasizes European digital sovereignty by keeping sensitive geological data within the region. This investment marks a transition from pilot projects to production-scale AI implementation for the energy major.
