A total of 82 cryptocurrency projects ceased operations in 2026, according to researcher Stacy Muur. The list of closed ventures includes Balancer, Radiant Capital, Neon EVM, and Step Finance. These shutdowns span across decentralized finance, blockchain infrastructure, and Web3 gaming sectors.

Financial instability remains a primary driver for these closures. The market downturn saw Bitcoin drop from a peak of over $126,000 in October 2025 to below $60,000 earlier this year. Consequently, projects struggled with dwindling revenues and depleted funding, failing to maintain economic viability.

Notable closures include the Ethereum layer-2 network Blast, which previously held over $2 billion in deposits, and Satori Finance. Specific operational failures also played a role: Step Finance shut down following a treasury breach, while Radiant Capital cited an unrecoverable 2024 exploit as the reason for its wind-down.

Data from DeFiLlama indicates that 100 projects announced shutdowns in 2026 as of August. Collectively, the affected entities had raised approximately $1 billion and generated $250 million in fees. Nine individual projects had secured more than $50 million in funding each.

The primary reasons for these failures include a lack of product-market fit, insufficient revenue, and exhausted capital. Meanwhile, the broader market shows signs of consolidation; while venture funding increased in the first half of 2026, the total number of deals dropped by 80% compared to the previous year.
