Tesla is planning to introduce a new large font option for its vehicle infotainment systems. This decision follows a public request on X by Stephen Fleming, who highlighted that current display settings remain difficult to read for some elderly drivers, even when the existing large text mode is enabled.
The company currently offers a text size adjustment feature introduced in the 2023.20 software update. Users can toggle between standard and large sizes via the display settings menu, though this process requires a vehicle restart. Fleming suggested that a significantly larger font, at least size 48, is necessary for better accessibility.
Elon Musk confirmed that the company will add a new large font option to the user interface. While no specific release date was provided, industry observers suggest the feature could be included in the upcoming annual holiday software update. Tesla is also exploring broader accessibility features, such as those implemented in the Cybercab, which includes wheelchair-accessible seating and braille labels.
Expanding font sizes may require a redesign of the vehicle's interface layout to accommodate larger text and touch targets. It remains unclear if Tesla will implement a responsive design that adjusts dynamically or a dedicated accessibility mode. Improving interface readability is considered a priority for Tesla as it targets elderly users for its supervised and future unsupervised FSD solutions.
