The S&P Global tech sector's forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio has fallen from 32x in October 2025 to 21x. This decline marks a 34% compression in valuation, returning the sector to levels last observed before the launch of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022.

Despite the valuation drop, tech sector fundamentals remain strong. Forward earnings estimates have increased by 19% over the past three months, a growth rate nearly double that of the next leading sector. Capital expenditures by hyperscalers and chipmakers continue to be robust.

The semiconductor industry shows a similar trend. The PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) currently trades at approximately 20x forward P/E, down from a peak of 30x in mid-2024. This level is comparable to the index's position in January 2023.

Analysts at Truist suggest the market may have overcorrected, as the gap between stock prices and business performance widens. Investor sentiment has been affected by public calls for caution regarding AI development from industry leaders including Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Elon Musk.

The reset in tech valuations holds implications for crypto markets due to the historical correlation between digital assets and tech stocks. Furthermore, the semiconductor companies impacted by the valuation shift are the same firms supplying hardware for crypto mining and blockchain infrastructure.
