A class-action antitrust lawsuit has been filed against OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI. The plaintiffs allege that these companies entered into an illegal conspiracy to intentionally slow down the development of artificial intelligence technologies, which directly impacts the quality of products paid for by consumers.

The legal complaint cites Section 1 of the Sherman Act, which prohibits agreements between competitors that restrain trade. The plaintiffs argue that the companies' actions constitute a form of anti-competitive behavior designed to limit the pace of innovation while maintaining existing pricing structures for their AI services.

The allegations stem from a blog post by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei titled We Must Pace the Frontier, where he advocated for industry-wide coordination to manage the development of advanced AI systems. According to the lawsuit, this proposal received public support from SpaceXAI founder Elon Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis.

The plaintiffs claim that without this alleged coordination, individual companies would not voluntarily slow their progress for fear of losing market share, revenue, and talent. The lawsuit seeks class-action status, a permanent injunction against the alleged coordination, and a formal judicial ruling that the companies violated federal antitrust laws.
