Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google have been holding private negotiations since July to establish an industry-led AI safety and auditing organization. These discussions involve working groups operating below the CEO level, with meetings continuing as of last week.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supports the creation of such an entity but advocates for AI labs to form it independently, without direct government support. Altman noted that the industry has yet to reach a full consensus, with some companies opposing the initiative.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently proposed a framework for self-regulation, suggesting that companies grant external evaluators, such as METR, access to their systems. He also called for limited antitrust exemptions to allow firms to collaborate on safety standards.
The proposal for an AI regulatory body has faced mixed reactions. While figures like Elon Musk and Demis Hassabis have expressed support for the general direction, Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez warned that such industry-led rules could resemble a cartel.
Previous attempts to establish a government-backed regulatory body, modeled after the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), stalled in the US government. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has expressed concerns regarding the creation of a national AI regulatory agency.
