Four consumers have initiated a class-action antitrust lawsuit against OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Google. The plaintiffs allege that these companies conspired to collectively slow down the development and improvement of their AI models.
The complaint cites an essay published on September 12 by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, which called for a coordinated deceleration of AI capabilities. Following this, Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly supported the proposal.
The lawsuit also references a working group meeting held in July involving representatives from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. Plaintiffs claim this meeting served as a foundation for an agreement to throttle output under the guise of establishing industry safety standards.
According to the filing, the four defendants control approximately 80% of the paid consumer subscription market for frontier AI models, including Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini.
