Transport & Environment (T&E) argues that the post-2030 Renewable Energy Framework should focus on reducing overall energy demand in the transport sector to decrease reliance on imported fuels and mitigate supply shocks.

The organization highlights that direct electrification is the most effective method to lower energy demand while improving competitiveness, ensuring security of supply, and reducing energy prices.

T&E states that increasing the adoption of electric cars, vans, and trucks reduces the need for imported fuels, positioning electrification as a strategy for economic and energy security.

The group warns that weakening CO2 standards for cars would slow electrification and increase the demand for fossil fuels, e-fuels, and advanced biofuels. Conversely, corporate fleet standards and scrappage schemes could accelerate EV uptake.

T&E emphasizes that a high renewable energy target alone is insufficient for energy sovereignty. It must be paired with ambitious electrification measures and a higher contribution from renewable electricity to avoid dependence on volatile global markets.
