The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, known as FINMA, has officially approved the country's first bitcoin exchange-traded fund accessible to retail investors. This decision marks a shift from previous regulations that restricted such investment vehicles exclusively to institutional or qualified participants.
FINMA granted an exemption from standard risk diversification rules for this product, citing the long trading history and high trading volume of bitcoin compared to other digital assets. The regulator noted that this approval responds to increasing demand for cryptocurrency exposure among the Swiss population.
Despite the regulatory green light, FINMA issued a warning that investments in bitcoin remain highly risky, even when conducted through an approved ETF structure. The announcement did not specify which financial institution or asset manager will be the first to launch the new fund in the Swiss market.
The development follows the successful launch of bitcoin ETFs in the United States in 2024. In the U.S. market, major financial firms including BlackRock, Fidelity, and Morgan Stanley currently manage over $97 billion in assets through these instruments, providing investors with regulated exposure to the cryptocurrency.
