On October 20, 2026, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) authorized the first retail Bitcoin exchange-traded fund in Switzerland. The product is classified as an other fund for alternative investments.

FINMA granted an exemption from standard risk-diversification rules, citing Bitcoin’s trading volumes and market history. This waiver applies specifically to Bitcoin and does not extend to other digital assets.

Institutions managing the fund must comply with custody and operational requirements established by FINMA on January 12, 2026. The regulator also mandates clear disclosures regarding potential losses and volatility.

This approval marks a shift from 2021, when FINMA permitted a diversified crypto fund restricted to qualified investors. The new framework allows public access to a single-asset fund, and multiple providers have already signaled interest in similar offerings.
