The Swedish Tax Agency, Skatteverket, is demanding approximately $56.5 million from six crypto mining firms located in Boden. The agency alleges that these companies improperly claimed tax incentives and VAT deductions intended for conventional data centers.

This enforcement is part of a wider audit covering 2024 to 2026, which involves nine companies nationwide facing claims exceeding SEK 500 million. Authorities estimate the total loss to public revenue from such tax discrepancies at around $100 million.

Bikupan Datacenter, a subsidiary of HIVE Digital Technologies, is among the firms targeted. The company has appealed its assessment to the Supreme Administrative Court, arguing that it functions as a managed services provider rather than a mining entity.

Bikupan is currently undergoing restructuring due to the financial impact of these penalties. In August 2026, HIVE recognized a non-cash provision of $84.7 million related to its Swedish tax disputes, leading the firm to reduce Bitcoin mining and pivot toward AI infrastructure.
