Stripe has officially designated January 1, 2026, as the start of the singularity, a concept attributed to rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and a surge in new business formations. Co-founder John Collison noted that while the term began as a lighthearted observation, it now reflects the company's internal assessment of current market shifts.
In an investor letter from mid-August 2026, Stripe leadership, including John and Patrick Collison and CTO William Gaybrick, announced plans to accelerate AI adoption. Simultaneously, the company confirmed the acquisition of OpenRouter, a marketplace and routing platform for AI models, for over $8 billion, primarily in stock.
Financial performance remains strong, with Stripe reporting a 41% year-over-year revenue increase and a 43% rise in free cash flow during the first half of 2026. This follows a 2025 performance where the company processed $1.9 trillion in payment volume, a 34% increase from the previous year.
Data from Stripe Atlas shows that the 2026 cohort is generating five times the revenue of the 2025 class as of October 2026, with a record number of solo founders. Additionally, coding agents have become the primary method for clients to integrate with the Stripe API, replacing traditional manual coding.
