Maintaining an accurate IT asset registry is challenging due to constant infrastructure changes. Manual updates often lead to discrepancies between recorded data and the actual state of the network. Effective management requires a unified source of truth that integrates data from various tools rather than relying on isolated monitoring or management systems.

The proposed workflow involves collecting information from multiple sources, such as network scanners and virtualization plugins. Data is first processed through an intermediate verification stage to identify potential conflicts. Only after this validation are the master records updated, ensuring that changes like IP address reassignments or virtual machine migrations are accurately reflected.

Automated identification has limitations, as single attributes like IP addresses or hostnames are insufficient for definitive asset matching. Tools like Nmap use service and version detection to hypothesize device types, operating systems, and application versions. However, the accuracy of this identification depends entirely on the information exposed by the services themselves.
