The Starling project has introduced Starling OpenOffice, an office suite featuring Writer, Sheets, and Slides tools. Developed using AI-assisted coding, the software runs directly in web browsers or as a standalone desktop application without requiring Starling Desktop.
The suite supports opening, editing, and saving DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files. Writer includes features like styles, tables, and spell checking; Sheets offers formula recalculation and sorting; Slides provides layout management and presentation modes.
Version 0.1.0 was released on October 14. Desktop versions include portable ZIP packages for Windows, DEB installers for Ubuntu and Debian, Flatpak for Linux, and packages for Apple Silicon Macs. The source code is licensed under Apache 2.0.
As an early-stage release, the software has known limitations. Windows users may encounter SmartScreen warnings due to unsigned code, and macOS versions may experience crashes in the Slides menu. Compatibility with complex Microsoft Office files remains a work in progress.
