Starfish Space is preparing to launch its first Otter satellite, designed for inspecting and servicing spacecraft in orbit. The mission is scheduled for October 1, 2026, via a SpaceX Transporter-18 launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base.
The development and production of the Otter satellite, which weighs between 300 and 335 kg, were funded by NASA with a $15 million contract under the SSPICY program. The spacecraft is equipped with the CETACEAN computer vision system and the Manta robotic arm with a Nautilus capture mechanism.
The primary objective of the mission is to perform visual inspections of inactive US-made satellites to assess their condition and potential for future repair or deorbiting. Starfish Space has already secured agreements to inspect and deorbit five satellites, including military, NASA, and commercial assets.
Founded in 2019 by former Blue Origin employees, the startup currently employs 120 people, up from 90 just a few months ago. The company is working to scale production, as it currently takes approximately 1.5 years to manufacture a single Otter unit, with at least five more satellites already in production.
