Shanghai Superconducting Technologies (SST) has completed the main structure of its new high-temperature superconducting tape manufacturing facility in Shanghai's Kangqiao industrial zone. The site spans approximately 92.62 acres, with construction having commenced on June 29, 2025. The project is recognized as a key industrial initiative for Shanghai.
Upon reaching full capacity, the new facility will produce 15,000 km of superconducting tape annually, making it the largest of its kind globally. This expansion will bring the total annual production capacity of the SST group to 20,000 km. Currently, its subsidiary, Shanghai Superconducting Equipment, produces 4,000 km of 12 mm wide tape per year.
The third phase of the project focuses on the world's first industrial line capable of producing 3 km long high-temperature superconducting tapes. The company expects to begin production on this line in the first quarter of 2027. The increased length of the tape is designed to reduce the number of connections required in energy and industrial applications.
