South Korea is preparing to amend its foreign exchange legislation to bring stablecoins used for payments under formal regulatory oversight. This change will integrate stablecoins into the existing national framework for foreign exchange reporting and supervision.

The Bank of Korea is also introducing a new monitoring system specifically for virtual assets. Previously, stablecoins in the country were managed under general virtual-asset rules without a dedicated statutory classification for their use in payments.

This regulatory shift aims to create a more structured environment for stablecoin transactions, including cross-border payments. Market participants are now observing how these changes will influence the broader adoption and valuation of digital assets within the country.
