HSBC has introduced its first Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin, RedCoin (RCHKD), integrated directly into the PayMe application. The asset is designed for retail transfers and merchant payments, with a one-to-one redemption ratio against the local currency.
The bank plans to roll out RedCoin wallets to over 3.3 million PayMe users in the coming days. HSBC Digital Assets Custody will manage the safekeeping of the stablecoin assets for customers.
Looking ahead, the bank intends to expand the use of RedCoin beyond retail payments. Future development phases will focus on tokenized investment subscriptions and applications for wholesale corporate and institutional clients.
HSBC secured its stablecoin issuer license in April, becoming one of the first companies approved under the regulatory framework of Hong Kong. This rollout follows the August launch of the HKDAP stablecoin by Anchorpoint.
